This craft not only incorporates techniques from shadow puppetry and paper-cutting, but also reflects historical context, fine art, and local customs. The tools used by the artists are simple, including a pot, a spoon, a stove, and a stone. However, the craftsmanship required is highly refined, with every step from boiling the sugar, to its color, and the timing of drawing, testing the skill of the sugar painter.
糖画艺人需要静气凝神,以勺为笔,以糖为墨,在光洁的大理石板上挥洒糖液。待糖液冷却凝固后,用竹签轻轻蘸上,一个晶莹剔透的糖画就此完成。每一个糖画都是独一无二的,展现着艺人的匠心独运。
The sugar painter needs to focus and pour the syrup onto a polished marble slab, using the spoon as a brush and the syrup as ink. After the syrup cools and hardens, they attach a bamboo stick and lift the delicate sugar painting. Each sugar painting is unique and shows the artist’s creativity and craftsmanship.
